Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert, with the help of aerial photos and AI. The images, called geoglyphs, date back around around 2,000 years and depict humanoid figures and domesticated animals. Some hint at human sacrifice, portraying decapitated heads and orcas armed with blades. The AI process may now be used beyond this heritage site. Speed is essential in identifying geoglyphs because many of them “lie on the cusp of erasure through agricultural expansion, urban development and wind-power generation," says David Beresford-Jones of the University of Cambridge. Here's more from the New Scientist (story may be paywalled).
