This is Banned Books Week, an annual event established in 1982 by a coalition of groups representing booksellers, publishers, librarians, authors, teachers and more. According to PEN America, more than 10,000 books were removed from school library shelves over the 2023/2024 school year — a near-triplefold increase from the bans in the previous year. Bans have increasingly restricted stories by and about women and girls. PEN America predicts higher totals to come with more laws concerning content restriction being signed.
